The translucent quality of Cadavre Illuminé V (Illuminated Corpse) is a returning element in the œuvre of Rayastre. The human interior, enlightened from within, with dried flowers acting as an guirlande,
celebrating the inside, the mystical world. Flowers and images are frozen in a timeless realm, floating motionless and at the same time moving towards us and moving away into the depth of one’s own psyche. The antique wooden frame has mildly abstracted composite flower ornamentation. To this, the artist has lovingly applied ornaments of dried flowers and images of butterflies, cut out from 19th century books, attached with cellotape. The frame is enclosed by a brown leather casing, withholding in it a lightbulb which illuminates the work from behind.
Like many of the works of Rayastre, Cadavre Illuminé V has a link to folk art, but is also a highly personal view into the mind of the artist, who humbly sees himself as a mere molecule in the hands of God.
